| Obverse description | The obverse features a central medallion depicting a Madonna and Child motif in high relief, rendered in a Byzantine-influenced artistic style. Surrounding the central roundel is an elaborate ornamental design of intertwining floral and foliate scrollwork, incorporating stylized tulips, roses, and dove motifs that fill the field. At the top center, the small state emblem of Ukraine — the trident (tryzub) — appears within a shield. The Cyrillic legend УКРАЇНА curves along the upper periphery, while ГРИВЕНЬ arcs along the lower periphery, with the denomination 20 and date 1996 inscribed below the central medallion. Engravers' marks appear at the lower left and right of the central roundel. |
