Mongolia's 20 Tögrög occupies an odd position in the series — low enough in face value to circulate heavily in everyday transactions, yet durable enough in De La Rue's paper stock to survive it. The denomination has roots in the Soviet-era monetary structure inherited after 1990, when Mongolia's post-communist transition left the Tögrög badly devalued; by the time this series launched in 2002, 20 Tögrög bought almost nothing, which partly explains why these notes accumulated in drawers rather than wearing out in wallets.
A watermark is the sole security feature — modest even by regional standards of the period.
