The central text in Cyrillic script states the obligation of the Bulgarska Narodna Banka to pay the bearer two thousand leva, valid until 31 March 1920, with signature lines for Контрольор (Controller), Управител (Governor), and Касиер (Cashier) at the lower portion. A vertical Cyrillic bank name inscription runs along the left border. |

Bulgaria's postwar financial position in 1919 was dire. The Treaty of Neuilly, signed November 1919, imposed heavy reparations on the country following its defeat as a Central Powers ally, and the Bulgarian National Bank was effectively printing its way through a sovereign debt crisis.
