Casa de Moneda de Chile produced this polymer specimen in 2013 to commemorate Pablo Neruda, the Nobel Prize-winning poet whose estate and diplomatic papers remained entangled in legal disputes long after his 1973 death — including persistent questions about the circumstances of that death itself, which Chilean courts were still formally investigating as late as the 2010s. The specimen format means it was never intended for circulation, produced strictly as a reference piece for archival or collector distribution.
Polymer substrate adoption by Casa de Moneda came relatively late compared to regional peers like Brazil and Mexico, and this issue reflects the mint's testing and demonstrating of that capability.
