The Azadi series was introduced in 1979 following the Islamic Revolution, replacing the Pahlavi coinage that had circulated under the Shah. The 2 1/2 Azadi denomination corresponds to a pre-revolutionary weight standard carried over from the imperial era, making it one of the heavier fractional issues in routine domestic circulation.
