The Azadi series was introduced in 1979 following the Islamic Revolution, replacing the Pahlavi coinage that had circulated under the Shah. Production has continued with only minor interruptions, though output volumes have fluctuated sharply in response to sanctions pressure and domestic gold demand — Iranians have long treated these coins as a primary store of value during periods of currency instability.
The 2 1/2 Azadi denomination corresponds to a pre-revolutionary weight standard carried over from the imperial era, making it one of the heavier fractional issues in routine domestic circulation.
