The characteristic crowned pillars-and-waves reverse design of the host 8 Reales is visible in the field, with partial mint mark and assayer initials discernible near the upper arc. The reeded edge of the original milled coinage is preserved along the curved outer border. The three countermarks are punched prominently across the face of the cut piece, serving as the official validation of the colonial administration. |

Saint Lucia changed hands between Britain and France twelve times before 1814, and the 1798 escalin issues belong to a period of British occupation during which no purpose-struck colonial coinage existed. Faced with a chronic shortage of small silver, authorities authorized the countermarking and cutting of Spanish colonial reales for local circulation — the escalin denominations emerging from this improvised monetary system rather than from any planned coinage program.
