The reeded edge of the original milled coinage is preserved along the curved outer border. Saint Lucia changed hands between Britain and France twelve times before 1814, and the 1798 escalin issues belong to a period of British occupation during which no purpose-struck colonial coinage existed. Faced with a chronic shortage of small silver, authorities authorized the countermarking and cutting of Spanish colonial reales for local circulation — the escalin denominations emerging from this improvised monetary system rather than from any planned coinage program.
The Prid#3 reference places this among the rarest confirmed varieties of the type.
