| Reverse description | At the centre, an oval shield is surmounted by a stylised sunburst and crossed by two pairs of spears arranged diagonally, forming the central armorial device. Within the shield, a standing antelope and a palm tree are depicted above a landscape vignette, all enclosed within an oval cartouche. The denomination 40 FRS is displayed in large numerals flanking the shield to left and right respectively, while the circular legend BANQUE D'EMISSION runs around the periphery, rendered in spaced capitals separated by a dotted inner border. |

| Additional information |
The Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique Équatoriale issued this essai as France was reassessing its monetary arrangements across Equatorial Africa in the mid-1950s — a period when federation politics, not economics, drove most currency decisions. Essais of this type were struck in controlled quantities for submission approval and are essentially never found in circulated condition.
The 40-franc denomination was peculiar to the equatorial issues and never saw general circulation.
