Obverse description The obverse presents a central vignette of the Mangyongdae birthplace of Kim Il-sung, rendered in fine intaglio lines against a pale rose and cream guilloche underprint. At upper left, the national emblem of the DPRK appears within a circular cartouche, flanked by Korean inscriptions identifying the issuing authority and denomination. A commemorative overprint in the central field marks the 100th birth anniversary of Kim Il-sung (1912–2012), with the serial number printed twice in red at upper right and lower left.

Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a large intaglio vignette of the Koryo Museum (Ryongtong Temple complex) in Kaesong, rendered with fine architectural detail amid surrounding trees. Denomination numerals appear at upper left and lower right corners, with the issuing authority inscription across the upper register. A guilloché border frames the composition on all sides, and a small inscription identifying the landmark appears below the central vignette.

The 5,000 Won note has been issued in this general format since 1977, but the 2006 redesign introduced by the Bank of Korea brought in a suite of modern security features and shifted printing entirely to KOMSCO's Gyeongsan facility. Prior to that consolidation, Korean currency printing had been split between domestic and foreign contractors. By 2013, the series was well into its production run with no significant design changes from the original 2006 specification.

Pick 18 is the current definitive issue — nothing experimental or transitional about it.
