| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of a bearded male figure facing right, rendered in moderate relief, occupying the central field. The subject displays a prominent mustache and goatee. The circular legend reads 'ROYAL MINT' along the upper periphery and 'TRIAL' along the lower periphery, both in raised Latin capitals. Two small floral or rosette ornaments flank the lower field at the nine o'clock and three o'clock positions, serving as decorative dividers between the upper and lower inscriptions. |

In 1960 the Royal Mint produced a series of pattern and trial pieces for Panama as the country evaluated coinage proposals. This steel specimen was almost certainly struck as a composition trial rather than a design trial — testing whether steel could serve as a practical substitute for the silver-clad and cupro-nickel alloys then under consideration for circulating Panamanian coinage.
Steel was never adopted for Panamanian centesimos.
