In 1960 the Royal Mint produced a series of pattern and trial pieces for Panama as the country evaluated coinage proposals. This steel specimen was almost certainly struck as a composition trial rather than a design trial — testing whether steel could serve as a practical substitute for the silver-clad and cupro-nickel alloys then under consideration for circulating Panamanian coinage.
Steel was never adopted for Panamanian centesimos.
