Kuwait's National Day commemoratives of the 1990s carried unusual political weight — the 35th anniversary fell just five years after Iraqi forces were expelled from the country, and the series functioned partly as an assertion of restored sovereignty during a period when Kuwait was still processing the destruction of its infrastructure and oil fields.
The 28.28g sterling specification was the standard Commonwealth commemorative blank of the period, produced in large volume by the Royal Mint and several European refiners for exactly this kind of contracted issue.
