The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands occupies the very waters Magellan entered in March 1521 after his fleet crossed the Pacific — the first Europeans to do so. He made landfall at Rota or Guam before pressing on to the Philippines, where he was killed at the Battle of Mactan just weeks later. The CNMI, as a U.S. Commonwealth lacking full congressional representation, issues coins under World Coin catalog designation rather than KM, reflecting its unusual political status and the fact that these pieces carry no legal tender authority recognized beyond the territory itself.
