Beschrijving keerzijde Central design portrays two full-rigged square-sail galleons of the early sixteenth century underway on a choppy sea, rendered in fine detail with multiple masts, billowing sails, and rigging; a small landing party is visible at lower left, and seabirds fly in the upper field. The mirror-like proof field provides strong contrast against the frosted devices. The legend DISCOVERED BY FERNAO DE MAGALHAES arcs along the upper left periphery, followed by the discovery date 6.3.1521 along the right. The issue year 2004 appears in the lower exergue.

Aanvullende informatie

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands occupies the very waters Magellan entered in March 1521 after his fleet crossed the Pacific — the first Europeans to do so. He made landfall at Rota or Guam before pressing on to the Philippines, where he was killed at the Battle of Mactan just weeks later. The CNMI, as a U.S. Commonwealth lacking full congressional representation, issues coins under World Coin catalog designation rather than KM, reflecting its unusual political status and the fact that these pieces carry no legal tender authority recognized beyond the territory itself.
