Ultramar Ltd., the Canadian petroleum retailer, issued gift certificates in dollar denominations as part of promotional campaigns during the late 1990s and early 2000s — a practice common among fuel retailers competing for customer loyalty before dedicated prepaid card infrastructure became ubiquitous. These were redeemable at Ultramar service stations, primarily in Quebec and Atlantic Canada where the brand held its strongest presence.
