An ornate numeral 5 in purple occupies the upper left, and the denomination text FIVE KINA is printed vertically along the right margin. Papua New Guinea adopted polymer for its lower denominations partly in response to the brutal tropical conditions that reduced cotton-paper notes to unusable pulp within months in high-humidity coastal and lowland regions. Note Printing Australia, which developed the Guardian polymer substrate in partnership with the Reserve Bank of Australia, has supplied PNG's polymer issues since the country made the switch.
The P#51 series ran across five years with no significant design changes between printings — date variants exist but carry no premium distinction in most specialist collections.
