Obverse description Black intaglio print on red guilloche underprint. A portrait vignette of President José Santos Zelaya occupies the left portion of the note, while a central vignette presents a steam passenger train in motion. The design is framed by ornate lathe-work borders typical of Waterlow & Sons engraving of the period.

(Translation: Republic of Nicaragua Value of Five Pesos Which The Nacional Treasury will receive as legal currency. September 15, 1900. Waterlow & Sons Ltd. London, England)
Reverse description Printed entirely in red. The Nicaraguan Coat of Arms is set within an elaborate central guilloche medallion, flanked on either side by the denomination numeral '5' within intricate lathe-work panels bearing the words CINCO at left and PESOS at right. The circular legend arcs around the upper portion of the central vignette, and the overall design is enclosed within a decorative border of fine geometric engine-turned patterns.
