| Obverse description | Central vignette of José Gervasio Artigas in portrait, set at the centre of the note against an intricate guilloche underprint. The issuer name arcs above in letterpress, with the face value numerals repeated at left and right flanks within ornamental frames. The obligation text and date of issue are inscribed in full across the lower portion of the note. |

| Reverse description | The Uruguayan coat of arms, engraved in fine intaglio within a beaded oval cartouche, occupies the centre of the note; the shield quarters show scales of justice, a fortress hill, a horse and an ox, surmounted by a radiant sun. The issuer name curves around the oval in bold serif lettering, divided above and below the arms. Elaborate lathe-work guilloche panels flank the centre, each enclosing an oval numeral "5 PESOS" at left and right, all printed in green on a light ground. The printer's imprint "Waterlow & Sons Ltd.
