Lagergeld — literally "camp money" — was a restricted scrip issued by the Wehrmacht high command for use in prisoner-of-war camps, theoretically complying with the 1929 Geneva Convention's requirement that POWs be compensated for permitted labor. In practice, the purchasing power of these notes was tightly controlled and the goods available for purchase were deliberately limited.
The 5 Reichsmark denomination was the highest value in the series, which meant it accumulated rather than circulated — few camp canteens stocked items at that price point. Allied POWs sometimes retained these as souvenirs; repatriation searches were inconsistent, and significant quantities left Germany with returning prisoners after 1945.
