The 1996 series marked the formal rebranding from the Brunei Currency Board to the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam, and these notes appeared during a period when Brunei was quietly consolidating its monetary institutions under tighter state control following the 1986 banking failures that had shaken public confidence. Thomas De La Rue's involvement with Brunei currency goes back decades — their relationship with small, oil-wealthy sultanates was a consistent feature of post-colonial Commonwealth monetary arrangements.
