The Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale — the BEAC — is a multinational central bank serving six CFA franc zone members, meaning this note was not issued by Gabon alone but by a regional authority headquartered in Yaoundé. Country-specific versions like this one were differentiated by letter code and overprint; the "A" designation identifies Gabon within the series. Each member state received its own allocation, printed to order by the Banque de France under the longstanding technical assistance arrangements that followed independence.

The 1985 date places this within the BEAC's post-1972 consolidated structure, after the earlier BCEAEC was reorganized following Equatorial Guinea's entry into the franc zone.
