The Banque Nationale du Laos was established only in 1955, following full independence from France, and this 500 Kip note belongs to the bank's earliest period of autonomous currency issue. Thomas De La Rue produced the series at a time when newly sovereign states across Southeast Asia were commissioning prestige printers to signal institutional credibility — Laos was no exception.
The "Buddhist Era" designation in the series title reflects the parallel calendar system used in Laos, where the year runs approximately 543 years ahead of the Gregorian — a detail that occasionally causes confusion in dating catalog entries for this issue.
