The Banque Nationale du Laos was established only in 1955, following full independence from France, and this 500 Kip note belongs to the bank's earliest period of autonomous currency issue. Thomas De La Rue produced the series at a time when newly sovereign states across Southeast Asia were commissioning prestige printers to signal institutional credibility — Laos was no exception.
