La Rioja is one of several Argentine provinces that has periodically reverted to issuing its own quasi-currency when transfers from the federal government run dry. The Chacho — named after Ángel Vicente "Chacho" Peñaloza, the 19th-century caudillo who led uprisings against centralist Buenos Aires — has been used as a provincial scrip instrument in various forms since the early 2000s.
