| Description de l’avers | Central field features the national coat of arms of the Republic of Dahomey, comprising a quartered shield supported by two leopards rampant, with a buffalo head crest above and a ribbon scroll bearing the national motto FRATERNITE JUSTICE TRAVAIL below. The date 1971 appears at the top of the field, flanked by the curved legend REPUBLIQUE DU DAHOMEY reading around the left and right periphery respectively. Secondary inscriptions 1er Août 1970 and 10ème Anniversaire are incused along the inner left and right margins, commemorating the tenth anniversary of independence. The denomination 5.000 FRANCS CFA is prominently rendered in large characters in the lower field, with the fineness hallmark 900 appearing in a small cartouche at lower right. The coin is struck to proof standard with deeply mirrored fields and frosted relief, and is bordered by a continuous beaded rim. |

| Description du revers | The reverse presents a finely engraved naturalistic scene depicting a herd of five African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) standing facing, rendered in high relief against a savanna landscape with tufts of tall grass in the foreground and a suggestion of open sky with horizontal cloud lines in the upper field. The animals are portrayed with considerable anatomical detail, their curved horns and massive bodies conveying a sense of power and authenticity. The legend BUFFLE appears in evenly spaced capital letters along the lower periphery, identifying the subject. The entire design is contained within a beaded border, and the proof finish provides exceptional contrast between the frosted figures and the mirror-polished field. |
