Multiple 'G' countermarks are applied at intervals around the coin's periphery as an anti-clipping measure, though the absence of continuous perimeter coverage frequently allowed marginal clipping, reducing many specimens to KM#2 weight. The host coin obverse may bear the effigy of any Portuguese or Brazilian ruler active during or prior to the period of issue, as the countermarking authority was indifferent to the specific monarch portrayed provided the host denomination was correct.
