Classification as KM#3 (rather than KM#2) is determined strictly by weight: specimens must weigh 14.3 g (the original host coin standard), approximately 13.21 g (the accepted average for countermarked examples), or no less than 12.61 g; pieces falling below this threshold are assigned to KM#2. Multiple 'G' countermarks are applied at intervals around the coin's periphery as an anti-clipping measure, though the absence of continuous perimeter coverage frequently allowed marginal clipping, reducing many specimens to KM#2 weight. The host coin obverse may bear the effigy of any Portuguese or Brazilian ruler active during or prior to the period of issue, as the countermarking authority was indifferent to the specific monarch portrayed provided the host denomination was correct. Significant wear, clipping, and gold dust extraction are characteristic of surviving examples, making well-preserved specimens of the requisite weight considerably scarce. |
