Ansbach's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the peak wave of German municipal emergency currency, when thousands of local authorities flooded the country with small-denomination paper to compensate for a catastrophic shortage of circulating coin. The Stadtrat's decision to engage a local designer rather than outsource to one of the major Notgeld printers — Koenig & Bauer, Giesecke & Devrient, and others handled enormous volumes of this work — kept production regional and gave the series a distinctly hand-crafted character.
Willy Flach is not a name that appears in any major printmaking reference, which suggests a municipal commission rather than a professional engraving house appointment.
