A lyre or kithara appears in the left field, serving as a civic symbol of Apollo-worshipping Kolophon. The ethnic legend ΚΟΛ is inscribed in the upper field, while the magistrate's name ΠΑΝΤΑΓΝΩΤΟΣ is rendered in the exergue in Greek characters. The composition reflects the vigorous equestrian type common to Ionian civic bronzes of the late fourth and early third century BC. |
