Apameia on the Orontes was one of the great Seleucid foundations, planted by Seleucus I and named for his Bactrian wife. By the late second century BC, as Seleucid authority fragmented under dynastic civil war and Roman pressure, Syrian civic mints like Apameia began striking autonomous bronze on their own account — this issue belongs to that period of municipal self-assertion.
