Philistian coinage of this period exists in a documentary vacuum — no ancient source names the issuing authority, and the cities most often proposed (Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod) have never been confirmed through controlled archaeological excavation of a mint site. These coins circulated in a region that sat between competing Persian administrative zones and the commercial pull of Athenian trade, which explains why so many Philistian types borrow directly from Athenian prototypes while quietly inserting local iconographic elements. The Gitler and Tal corpus remains the definitive organizing framework precisely because no other classification has managed to sort the die evidence with comparable rigor.
