| Reverse description | A honeycomb arrangement of ten hexagonal cells, each bearing the heraldic emblem or coat of arms of one of the ten member states of the European Community as of 1981. The word 'EUROPA' appears to the right of the hexagonal cluster within the field. The design symbolises European unity, with each hexagon of equal size and the cluster centrally positioned on the coin. |

| Additional information |
Greece's 1981 ECU issue was struck to mark the country's accession to the European Economic Community on January 1st of that year — the tenth member state to join. These ECU pieces were never legal tender in any conventional sense; they circulated among collectors and institutions as a kind of proto-European currency, a private fantasy of monetary union that wouldn't formally materialize for another two decades.
