Obverse description Full-length standing figure of Europa, helmeted and draped in classical robes, facing front and occupying the central field. The figure is flanked on either side by large laurel branches forming an open wreath, with stylized column elements visible at left and right. The legend EUR-OPA is arranged in a curve around the central figure. Along the lower exergue, the engraver's signature P. RODIER appears alongside the hallmark poinçon 1* and the fineness and weight inscription AG. 925‰ 40G.

The ECU — European Currency Unit — was not legal tender in any conventional sense but a basket currency used for accounting within the European Monetary System, which launched in March 1979. France issued this silver piece to mark that founding moment, with nine member states participating at inception. The "Europa" series continued annually, making 1979 the first and arguably most historically significant strike in the run.
