The Vijayanagara Empire operated a tiered coinage system in which copper jitals served the lower end of daily market exchange — grain, cloth, and labor transactions that gold fanam denominations simply couldn't accommodate. Production was decentralized across multiple regional mints, which accounts for the considerable variation in fabric and module seen across surviving examples of this type.
