Comments

The Bodelschwingh institutions at Bethel, near Bielefeld, have operated their own internal token currency for well over a century — originally to give residents with disabilities a means of participating in the local economy without access to external cash. By 2002, when this voucher was issued, the practice was largely a continuation of institutional tradition rather than strict economic necessity, maintained partly for therapeutic and social reasons. The Bethel community functions almost as a self-contained town, with its own shops, bakeries, and services where these vouchers circulate.

The denomination in "Bethel-Cent" reflects the post-2002 realignment to decimal euro-era terminology.
