Obverse description Central field bears the Bolivian coat of arms in high relief, flanked on either side by the curved legend REPUBLICA BOLIVIANA. A row of eleven five-pointed stars is arranged along the lower periphery of the design, referencing the departments of the republic. The heraldic composition is rendered in the classical style typical of mid-nineteenth-century South American coinage.

Bolivia's monetary reform of 1863 had officially decimalized the currency, but physical production of the new boliviano denomination took years to materialize. This 1868 pattern was almost certainly produced in Europe — most likely Paris or Birmingham — as a proposal piece submitted to the Bolivian government for approval of the new coinage design.

Silver-plated copper was the standard medium for such submissions, keeping costs manageable while approximating the appearance of the intended circulating coin.
