Bolivia's monetary reform of 1863 had officially decimalized the currency, but physical production of the new boliviano denomination took years to materialize. This 1868 pattern was almost certainly produced in Europe — most likely Paris or Birmingham — as a proposal piece submitted to the Bolivian government for approval of the new coinage design.
Silver-plated copper was the standard medium for such submissions, keeping costs manageable while approximating the appearance of the intended circulating coin.
