| 表面の説明 | Central field bears the Bolivian coat of arms in high relief, flanked on either side by the curved legend REPUBLICA BOLIVIANA. A row of eleven five-pointed stars is arranged along the lower periphery of the design, referencing the departments of the republic. The heraldic composition is rendered in the classical style typical of mid-nineteenth-century South American coinage. |

Bolivia's monetary reform of 1863 had officially decimalized the currency, but physical production of the new boliviano denomination took years to materialize. This 1868 pattern was almost certainly produced in Europe — most likely Paris or Birmingham — as a proposal piece submitted to the Bolivian government for approval of the new coinage design.
Silver-plated copper was the standard medium for such submissions, keeping costs manageable while approximating the appearance of the intended circulating coin.
