The denomination '2' appears to the upper left and 'C.ES' to the upper right of the star, flanking the uppermost point. The Congo Free State was Leopold II's personal colonial possession — not a Belgian state territory — and its coinage program was correspondingly thin and erratic. This trial strike in nickel almost certainly reflects deliberate material testing ahead of a proposed circulation issue; the 2 centimes denomination was never ultimately released for general use in the colony, making surviving essais the only physical evidence that the denomination was seriously considered at all.
