The Congo Free State was Leopold II's personal colonial possession — not a Belgian state territory — and its coinage program was correspondingly thin and erratic. This trial strike in nickel almost certainly reflects deliberate material testing ahead of a proposed circulation issue; the 2 centimes denomination was never ultimately released for general use in the colony, making surviving essais the only physical evidence that the denomination was seriously considered at all.
