Obverse description A stylized oak tree occupies the central field, rendered in primitive hammered relief with spreading branches and foliage radiating from a short trunk. The tree is surrounded by a beaded inner circle, with the colonial legend MASATHVSETS arranged around the periphery. The lettering is characteristic of the crude workmanship typical of seventeenth-century American colonial coinage, with irregular letter spacing. The overall design reflects the simplified engraving style of the Boston mint under John Hull and Robert Sanderson.
