Opmerkingen

The nickname "5 Patadas" — five kicks — was street slang attached to the 5 Cruzeiros note during Brazil's mid-twentieth century inflationary period, when the currency's purchasing power had degraded so thoroughly that the note was considered good for little more than an insult. Whether the name referred to the denomination's uselessness or to some rougher piece of popular humor is debated, but the term stuck firmly enough to pass into common usage.
