The surrounding marginal legend, reading in a continuous band, records the mint and date formula: 'In the name of God, this dirham was struck in Isbahan in the year six and ninety and one hundred (AH 196 / AD 812).' The inscription is the sole decorative element, executed in angular Kufic calligraphy typical of Abbasid monetary production, with no figural imagery. The field between the central inscription and the marginal legend is plain. |
