The bird's prominent beak and eye are clearly delineated, with the wing and body indicated by a series of pellets and incuse lines. The plumage is suggested by radiating strokes surrounding the body, giving the design a dynamic, almost abstract quality characteristic of early Anglo-Saxon die-cutting. The field is unlettered, and the coin is bordered by a beaded outer ring consistent with the sceat series. The overall style reflects the transitional artistic idiom of the primary phase of English sceat production. |

The square frame itself is set within the round coin flan, with the corners of the square nearly touching the inner beaded border. Additional pellets and a small crescent or annulet motif appear below the square, and partial runic or debased Latin letter-forms are visible in the angles outside the square. The entire design is enclosed by a beaded outer border. The legend, reading [+ SΛI]VIΛOΔCITΔO in a mixture of Latin and pseudo-runic letterforms, surrounds the central motif and is associated with the moneyer name 'Saroaldo'. |
